I have always been a huge fan of baking, so when I got given a ‘learn how to make your own sourdough’ course for Christmas, I was thrilled! Crust and Crumb is a bakery in Alberton owned by a total power couple. They give bread making courses every 2nd month in Cape Town which are always fully booked!

We started off learning the basics of bread making – the ingredients, the method and the scientific processes that need to take place in order to make a great loaf of sourdough. Sourdough is a way more complex and tastier bread than most other varieties. Thus, it is also a lot more healthy.

The main benefit of eating sourdough is that the bread is easier to digest as it is made with a fermented culture (not to mention the fact that it’s damn right delicious!). The culture usually takes 2 weeks to form if fed and maintained correctly.

We then moved on to mixing, kneading and shaping our sourdough loaves, adding in the culture as we went along. We then scored the bread into a pattern and watched as it baked away! The bread came out magnificently. I never thought I could have this much appreciation for a loaf of bread!

The owners of Crust and Crumb, Nathan & Dominique, are truly artisanal bakers at heart. The amount of knowledge and effort that goes into successful bread making is honestly unbelievable. I vow to never purchase a mass produced loaf from a convenience store ever again!

The taste, shape and crumb of the bread along with the texture is what really impressed me. I have tasted a lot of bread before, but there is truly nothing like home made!

Thank you both for an informative, fun class of learning the know-how of authentic bread making. I felt like a pro when I left, I hope this feeling lasts with my own home baking! A definite must-do if you love being creative in the kitchen.

The next course in Cape Town is coming up on the 23, 24, 27 and 28th March – Book yours at

They do sourdough and also standard bread baking if you prefer. Get your bake on!
