The Cool Wine and Country Food Festival was a memorable experience. It was my first time exploring the Elgin Valley situated in Grabouw. First off was a stop at the renowned Peregrine Farm stall for a bite and coffee. They have awesome dairy free and gluten free options available, as well as vegan cupcakes and treats. Thereafter we ventured to the Elgin railway market, where all the buzz and excitement was. This year, Elgin decided to have a shuttle service at the festival, taking visitors to each wine farm for their much anticipated tasting. There was so much to do that we felt we needed more time!
The Elgin Railway market had a variety of food stalls, a gin bar and live music to enjoy. The Elgin valley is such a tranquil place- We stayed at the Houw Hoek hotel and it was so magnificent! The newly renovated rooms have views of the mountain, are beautifully designed and the shower heads make you feel like you’re under a waterfall! The staff were friendly and accommodating, and the breakfast buffet had everything from hashbrowns to muesli to mimosas and much more! I was so impressed by the fact that they had almond milk available- yay! The Houw Hoek hotel is a must visit, along with the padstal across the road for snacks and a wide variety of freshly baked goods and craft gin and beer.
My 3 favourite wine estates were:
*Charles Fox – The MCC is to die for! Not to mention the beautifully packaged bottles, perfect views of the valley and stunning interior.
*Lothian Vineyards- This award winning house has previously been featured on top billing – breathtakingly beautiful, we sipped our wine next to the brilliant blue poolside whilst enjoying the live music. Tranquil is the only word to describe this place!
*Almenkerk Wine Estate- A wonderful experience in apple country, this estate is 5 star with gorgeous views of the valley and a relaxed setting where you can enjoy a glass or two of their divine Rose! They have boule and a jungle gym to keep the kids entertained.
As the harvest had come to an end, the vineyards were decked in their autumn finery. Each of the participating wineries offered a unique program, allowing visitors to tailor-make their experience according to their own personal preferences, whilst enjoying a welcome alternative to the hustle and bustle of city life. Award winning wines, a variety of food and crafts, live entertainment and natural scenic wonders ensured that visitors, young and old, enjoyed a memorable time in this hospitable valley.
